It’s been exactly forty-five hours since I was in her room and she entered her number in my phone—forty-five hours—but I don’t know what the customary amount of time to wait is. Two days, three? I’d ask Nessa, but she’s still pissed at me. After our fight yesterday, she sulked out of the living room and then busted out the front door. She left and hasn’t been back. I texted her this morning to check on her, but she hasn’t responded. Earlier, Bass said he talked to her and she’s fine, but I don’t know how to fix this.

Nessa is one of my best friends. I know how she feels about me, but I can’t make myself feel things I don’t. I can’t change the way I feel. If I could, I wouldn’t be staring at my phone for the second hour in a row trying to decide if I should call or text a girl who is practically a stranger to me.

It just doesn’t feel that way, though. It doesn’t feel like she’s a stranger. I have this uncontrollable urge to be near her while simultaneously knowing I shouldn’t be. My very nature is a danger to her, but with Amon in the picture, my gut tells me I need to keep her close, even if that’s the only reason.

It isn’t the only reason. I want her. I want to see her, touch her, be with her. I want to taste her, and that’s the worst part. I can’t taste her, but every time I smell her, I have to force myself not to throw her against a wall and drain her dry.

I shudder at the thought.

I’m just going to do it. I’m going to call. Texting is too impersonal. I have to call.

I finally click on her name and hit send. As it rings, I consider hanging up, but it’s too late because, on the second ring, she picks up.

“Hello?”

My lips part, prepared to speak, but I can’t get the words out.

“Hello?” she calls again. “Who is this? If this is someone about my freaking car warranty, I’m not interested.”

I hear her pull the phone away from her ear, and I know she’s about to hang up, so I force myself to blurt, “Ever, wait.”

“Who is this?” she repeats, her sweet breathing coming through low and steady.

“It’s…Talon.”

I cringe at how stupid I sound—like a twelve-year-old boy—but when she speaks again, she sounds chipper, almost excited that it’s me.

“Oh, hey, Talon.”

I grin like a complete moron, even though she can’t see me. “Hey.”

I slap my forehead. I don’t get like this. I don’t make a fool of myself in front of women. I’m confident, cool. If I want a girl and she wants me, then I have her. But right now, it’s as if I have zero experience, as if this is my first time.

I’ve been quiet too long, though, because before I can get to the point, Ever calls out, “Talon, you there?”

“Oh, yeah. I’m here. I just…wanted to check on you.
